Buying Local - Going National?
By Libby Waldo | January 25, 2008
I know the headline might seem contradictory but in essence, the idea of buying locally (like we saw with Cam’s 2008 Resolutions) is turning into quite the trend, on a national level. According to a study, put out by the Independent Business Forum, cities with active “Buy Local” campaigns reported larger sales growth during the holiday season than cities without such campaigns. I am sure there are many contributions to this, but it is great to see that not only do we want to support and contribute to our local economies but at a larger level we are able to make a change. For many years, with the rise of big-box stores and online discounters people wondered, what is going to happen to my local book store, pharmacy, florist, etc? It looks like, for the time being, the local shops we love still have a chance. I have taken Cam’s que to be better at supporting my local stores and I’d love to see an even greater emphasis in all cities and communities on “Buying Locally.”
