Human Search vs. Algorithmic Search - The Debate
By Cameron Ferroni | January 23, 2008
OK, for this weeks post I’m actually mostly going to point you all at some interesting discussions already underway regarding Human Search vs. Algorithmic Search. During a panel discussion yesterday at the Digital Life Design conference in Munich, Jason Calacanis from Mahalo faced off with Jimmy Wales from Wikia, in a a discussion around whether or not Algorithmic search was sufficient, or if you needed human interaction to really create quality search results. Marissa Mayer of Google even joined in from the audience to comment. There is really good coverage of this on both TechCrunch and over on ReadWriteWeb, so I won’t steal their thunder by repeating everything they’ve had to say. Mostly it’s good food for thought for all of us. As you know I’m spending a lot of time trying to find the right balance between direct user involvement and full algorithmic. Personally I think the answer has to lie in the middle, because neither extreme is tenable. That said, it’s where in the middle that the magic lies…..
